Curve 8520: A nifty communicator

Everyone is talking about the Apple iPhone these days; the types of applications you can get on it, the things you can accomplish with an iPhone (“almost anything” they will say), how wonderfully easy it is to use and how cool it will make you look.

The iPhone is seen as a flashy, futuristic and fun product but is heavily reliant on third-party software to make it successful.

Most treat it as a replacement for an MP3 player and a portable game console, like a Sony PSP and Nintendo DS,

It’s more of a tool for fun and play rather than for serious communication which is what a BlackBerry is essentially famous for. When BlackBerry first hit the market, it was targeted at those involved in the higher echelons of management and the like.

Since they were on the go quite often and needed to make swift decisions due to market trends for example, the BlackBerry offered them the ability to receive and reply to e-mail instantly anywhere in the world.

Research In Motion, the company behind the BlackBerry made sure that the product and service they provided was efficient and secure which made it a very attractive tool indeed.

It became a mobile office and was branded as the tool that solders you to your job 24/7.

More so though, it became a status symbol, one that almost meant that if you had a BlackBerry you were somebody important and productive.

It did not help that celebrities started to use it too, to communicate to the myriad of people they worked with, be it studio and record executive chiefs or their managers or even just to each other.

US President Barack Obama is a known BlackBerry addict and used it heavily while on his campaign trails. Even now, he has one specially designed for him with special encryptions to further secure it.

Touch-screen phone use soars, iPhone on top

Market research firm ComScore reported on Tuesday that touch-screen mobile-phone adoption is not only on the rise, it's growing at a rapid rate.

Touch-screen phone adoption grew by 159 percent between August 2008 and August 2009, according to ComScore. The firm also found that by the end of August 2009, there were 23.8 million users with touch-screen mobile phones in the United States alone. In August 2008, just over 9.2 million people were using touch-screen phones.

But it's not just the touch screen that's enjoying strong growth. ComScore also found that smartphones are gaining traction across the U.S. Between August 2008 and August 2009, smartphone adoption grew by 63 percent. There were 20.7 million mobile subscribers using smartphones in August 2008. More than 33.7 million subscribers had smartphones by August 2009.

Unsurprisingly, it was the iPhone that led the way during that period. According to ComScore, the iPhone was the top touch-screen device for users aged 13 and older, capturing 32.9 percent of the touch-screen market. The LG Dare placed a distant second, accounting for 8.7 percent of the touch-screen phones in the wild. That device was followed up by the LG Voyager, BlackBerry Storm, and Palm Treo, which captured 7.8 percent, 7 percent, and 6.5 percent of the market, respectively.

It's also worth noting that the average user of a touch-screen device is younger than those who use standard mobile phones. According to ComScore, 51.4 percent of smartphone users are under the age of 35. A whopping 57.7 percent of touch-screen users fall within that age range. ComScore also found that 20.6 percent of touch-screen users range in age between 18 and 24. Less than 5 percent of touch-screen users are 65 and older.

Nokia E 72 Media Launch – Pakistan – My Thoughts

As promised here are my thoughts about the Nokia E72 Media Launch held on 27th Oct 2009 , at Sheraton Hotel Karachi Pakistan , where Ms Trude Gjaland , Category Head ‘E’ Series Nokia MEA came all the way from Dubai

First it was an event well conducted , the Q & A style with Khurram , Product Manager Nokia Pakistan and Afghanistan , asking questions and Trude and Imran Khalid Mahmood , GM Nokia Pakistan answering them , some may call it a fixed interview , it was but the questions were too the point and answers were too related to the event . A much refreshing setup than people coming on stage and giving speeches .

Trude’s coming to Pakistan shows Nokia’s commitment to the country and it’s market , in these times when travel advisories are being issued for Pakistan , Trude took a bold step to come here , attend the program and also visited the market .

Pakistan may look small on the map but telecom density wise it rivals the developed nations in the west with more than 90 million connections in the population of 170 million . The country has also seen one of the highest telecom growth rates and boost one of the lowest calling rates in the world . On services wise , almost all of Pakistan is GPRS / EDGE equipped with minimum of white areas and with data rates as low as Rs 500 / Month ( USD $6) for an unlimited ( 2 GB Fair Use Policy ) data limit for Nokia E series it’s a lucrative market .

Trude’s visit to Pakistan emphasizes on the importance of Pakistan in Nokia’s portfolio , she is not the first to come to Pakistan earlier in June Mr. Head of N Series MEA came to Karachi on Nokia N97 launch .

Mobiles Sans IMEI Numbers Face Disconnec

Almost a yearlong saga of banning non-IMEI laden, cheap Chinese phones still goes on. Following the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, the government had directed the cellphone companies to bar mobile phones with no or spoofed IMEIs from their networks. That, however, was not strongly implemented with a number of flip-flops from both - the government and the cellphone manufacturers.

Almost a year on, in its latest move, the Indian Cellular Association (ICA) has announced that cellphones without IMEI will face disconnections by December. The announcement comes following a DoT directive where mobile operators were asked to disallow calls from such handsets to be completed. There are an estimated 25 million such handsets in circulation across the country - owing to which replacement of all such handsets is a difficult proposition. The only way out as the ICA has figured out is to make people aware about the advantages of a using phone with a valid IMEI and request users of all such phones to migrate to another phone before the cut-ff date. In fact, the ICA had started a countrywide campaign in order to make the transition from a non-IMEI phone to a legal one smooth.

Apart from being a security concern, these phones had also started eating onto shares of genuine manufacturers who were unable to compete with unbranded Chinese phones in terms of price and features. Quality wise though, it's a no contest.

T-Mobile Equinox: A Festive Feature Phone

Most 'feature phones' (a nice way of saying dumb phones) are pretty much the same these days. That's why we don't waste our words covering every single low-end mobile phone that gets churned out these days. Sometimes, though, a feature phone comes along that's worthy of comment. The T-Mobile Equinox (via Gizmodo) is one such phone.

In terms of specs, the Equinox beats the pants off most other dumb phones out there. It has integrated GPS, a 3.2 MP camera, an FM radio, bluethue, and the ability to act like an epileptic disco ball when it receives a call. When it launches, the Equinox will cost $50 with a two-year contract. If you're one of those luddites still holding off on buying a smartphone, this could be the light-spewing feature phone for you.

Virtual Keypad For Nokia 5800

When using a Nokia 5800 , sometimes , I come across software which is not meant for S60v5 but acts as a base for it’s updated version to install ( I was using Garmin XT v 5.00.0 to acts as a base for Garmin XT 5.0.50 ) and I need the actual soft keys to click ‘NEXT’ and as the onscreen option on the screen was not responding to touch the solutions I had were to install Apple BT keyboard and use that but it’s too cumbersome , the other solution was to use a Virtual Keypad .

Virtual Keypad gives an Overlay of a small keypad over any program and you can use it just like a regular keypad on any Nokia phone , the Virtual Keypad features a 5 Way D-Pad , full numerical , SHIFT and DEL Keys and two soft keys .

Pay-as-you-go Android hits the UK this week at T-Mobile

Now if you want to try out Android without taking on a hefty contract, there is a pay-as-you-go option for the first time in the UK, with the launch of the T-Mobile Pulse.

The phone shares many of the characteristics of some other Android handsets targeted at the mass market of mobile web users and younger consumers – integrated social networking, simple user interface, midrange media features. The Pulse, which is actually made by Huawei but branded by T-Mobile, offers some of the features of new products like Motorola Dext/Cliq, but without any contract tie-in. Instead, users will have to shell out an upfront £179.99.

The Pulse has good connectivity – HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS, better than some smartphones – but is middle of the road on other hardware. For instance, its camera is 3.2-megapixels and has autofocus but no flash. The design is slimline with a 2Gb microSD card included and a 2.5mm headphone jack. It has a 3.5-inch touchscreen.

For those who prefer to spread their payments, the Pulse can also be taken on a two-year deal of £30 a month, spreading TMo’s bets when it has slapped a fairly hefty price tag on the pay-as-you-go option. This taps into the trend for even higher end users to go for prepaid in the current downturn. "We've seen an increase in the take-up of £80-plus devices on prepay," said T-Mobile UK, though it did add that the Pulse was designed to be “aspirational”. It expects the phone to appeal to 18 to 24-year olds, whereas the HTC Android products carried by the carrier were aimed at an older segment and early adopters.

The Pulse came to the UK this week and will also appear over the coming weeks in all T-Mobile’s European territories - Germany, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Macedonia and Croatia.

Other midrange Android handsets are starting to appear to broaden the platform’s appeal beyond the smartphone base. These include the Dext and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Lite, plus another HTC model, the Click/Tattoo.

For the people who have to travel as a part of their work and need to make frequent trips out of their native land, it may be a problem to stay connected. This however is not enforced on the users if they go for pay as you go deals since they can easily switch to local networks.

Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97 - an Unbeatable Combo

The world of touchscreen mobile phones is starting to get exciting, as the most recognised brand in the business has announced not one, but TWO mobile phones: the sleek Nokia 5800 and the totally mind-blowing Nokia N97.

Early Nokia touchscreens

A lot of people seem to be under the incorrect impression that the Nokia 5800 is the first ever touchscreen mobile phone to come from the Finnish manufacturer. It's not. The opposite's true, because there's been a few touchy-feely phones released under the Nokia brand. Beginning with the 7700, the world has seen a few Nokia mobile phones which work by you prodding and poking the screen.

They all had reasonably big (for their time) screens, but unfortunately, they shared something else: they were unbearably hideous. Just one of those mobile phones, the 6708, displayed a modicum promise, but that was destined solely to be sold in China, and so, it wasn't meant for us in these sceptred isles. Unfortunately, that meant that the phones we got were total, utter toss.

However, these unpleasant memories have all been exorcised due to the launch of a pair of new Nokia mobile phones, both of which have touchscreens, and both of which are much, much more alluring...

Nokia 5800 - a piece of art

The first phone up is a brand new member of Nokia's Xpress range of music mobile phones, the stunning Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. This phone is pretty obviously designed for music and media, as it has a dedicated XpressMusic button which opens a list of links to music, videos, the web, and more.

Oh, and the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, to let you use those different media files. Basically, the Nokia 5800 was designed to be a little handheld jukebox and movie player, and as music phones go, this is easily one of the sweetest. The Nokia 5800 also has, built-in, a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA data connection and GPS, making it a brilliant all-round mobile phone, as well as a brilliant media player. Oh, and it has a lanyard to attach a fake guitar pick. Pointless, but brilliant.

Despite all those features, the Nokia 5800 is very definitely a mid-range device; it isn't, nor will it ever be, a full-on top-ender. That role falls to another mobile...

Nokia N97 - more powerful than Mexico...

With the Nokia 5800 on track to bring touchscreen mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a massive gap at the absolute top-end, and yes, there IS a touch-based mobile phone coming soon to take its place as the top-end powerhouse: the utterly jaw-dropping Nokia N97. This uses the same Symbian S60 Touch operating system and crams it inside the body of a proper, full-on smartphone. Which means it has an even more huge, 3.5 inch screen, a kick out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera's been upgraded to 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, obviously, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it really is as hyper-powered as the rumours had us believe, with HSDPA, GPS, digital compass, and integrated Flash, so that you get an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Put it like this: the Nokia N97 is unbelievable. It easily outdoes other mobile phones and as the 5800 aims firmly for the mid-range, I reckon that the Nokia N97 will totally DOMINATE the world in 2009!

That's the question that you're bound to ask yourself with the latest Nokia E63 mobile phone. Why ? Well essentially the Nokia E63 is a stripped down Nokia E71 that Nokia claim ditches some of the features aimed at the hardcore corporate world and softens the blow in the wallet to us mere mortals that simply wouldn't use them. In a nutshell it's a smartphone for the masses - But does it cut the mustard or is it simply a charlatan with nothing behind the smile ?

Don't be fooled into thinking though that the E63 is some poor relation as it's one hell of a 3G smartphone which makes communication as simple and easy as possible. With a full QWERTY keyboard, e-mails and attachments can be dealt with easily & quickly on the large 2.36" display. Dedicated one-touch keys: Home, calendar, contacts, and email let you access your most used applications at the touch of a single button. Intelligent input with auto-completion, auto-correction and learning capability make your life even easier too.

Memory is expandable upto a more than adequate 8Gb via the microSD expansion slot for those all important files & there's 110Mb of internal memory to get you started with.

Connectivity couldn't be easier as you can instantly connect on the go via any Wi-Fi hotspot. Surf the net, access mail and more at broadband like speeds whenever & wherever you are 24/7.

So just what am i missing out on then ? Well, read on as it may or may not matter and you could save a whole wedge of hard earned cash.

The styling of the E63 is where the difference is most significant. The E63 feels sturdy, but it lacks the solid metal feel of the E71. Again, the lower price tag may make you forgive the cost-effective approach to the exterior.

Poor camera performance compared to the E71 as you only get a 2MP camera & not the 3.2 of the E71

No GPS receiver - You won't be using it as a Satnav then....

Lack of "extra goodies" in the box - Don't expect a datacable, Nokia Stereo Headset , Leather Pouch & Strap in the box like you get with the E71

Little niggles - There is an FM radio but it lacks RDS, there aren't any preinstalled games and the 3.5mm jack protective bud is not attached to the body which is quite irritating

Obviously it's your money at the end of the day and life is about compromises. The E63 is a very good phone that represents good value for money...but will you always secretly regret not shelling out that little bit more ?
