Nokia maintains No 1 in mobile phone sale

POPULARITY OF mobile phone is increasing day by day, as it has became one of the most popular devices for communication. Market of mobile has increased with 13.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2008, over the first quarter of 2007.

According to Gartner, Nokia still maintained its position as a number one market vendor with selling of 1152 lacs mobile set in the first quarter of this year. Although the market share of Nokia has slightly comedown. But with the wider range, Nokia is capable of leading, in the market. Samsung is the the number two vendor of mobile phone market. Its performance was quite apprehensive. Samsung sold 424 lakhs mobiles in this period. Motorola, the third vendor of market, showed some poor results and sold only 299 lakhs units. There is a huge gap between the performance of Motorola and Samsung in the first quarter.

For the fourth position, there was competition between LG and Sony Ericsson. But in this first quarter, LG got very good start and occupied the fourth position in worldwide market.

LG sold 236 lakhs mobile sets, whereas Sony Ericsson sold only 221 lakhs sets.

"While sales in emerging markets continued to be driven by strong growth of net new subscribers, mature markets felt the pressure of an uncertain economic environment," said research director for mobile devices at Gartner, UK, Carolina Milanesi. "Sales of high-end devices in particular were lower as consumers turned to mid-tier devices when looking to upgrade their old phones. Phone manufacturers should strengthen their mid-tier offerings in order to cater to those users that might be reticent to invest too much money in replacing their old phones when the economic environment remains challenging."

Nokia N96: incoming!

When it was launched, Finnish giant Nokia's N95 was the flagship mobly for the convergence generation, lobbing together plentiful features and applications in its portly plastic bod. Then the iPhone appeared and cruelly stole its limelight with its touchy feely loveliness.

Nokia is fighting back though with its new flagship dual-sliding N96, which if Play.com's pre-order page is to be believed will be coming to Blighty from 31 July, nearly two months after the expected 3G iPhone release on 9 June.

The N96 promises to channel DVB-H TV tuner for live telly action, WLAN, HSDPA, Nokia Maps with Assisted GPS, Carl Zeiss optics endowed five-Meg camera with flash and video light, FM radio, 16GB internal memory and 2.8-inch screen into your information receptors. Well endowed.

Hold on to your happy horses though, as the originally touted 550 euro (that's about £440 in proper money) price has seemingly been injected with cash collagen by Play.com, who is offering it up at a bank breaking £599 for an un-locked SIM free model. Ouch.

For that kind of cash we'd rather buy a 3G iPhone and take our mums to Butlins for the weekend.

The Sony Ericsson P200 the mobile formally known as the Paris

It appears that the Sony Ericsson Paris has been given a new name, and is now to be known as the Sony Ericsson P200. Ever since before Sony Ericsson’s P1 mobile phone even existed the Sony Ericsson Paris halo mobile phone was rumoured as its successor, and it now seems as this is official according to a leaked document on Sony Ericsson’s website.

The Sony Ericsson P200/ex-Paris hasn’t changed much otherwise, and this small detail isn’t such big news, but it does show that the Sony Ericsson Paris is now to be called the P200, and this way people won’t get mixed up thinking it’s a totally new mobile phone coming from Sony Ericsson, right?

So, the Sony Ericsson P200 will apparently sport HSDPA, rocker keypad and a sliding QWERTY along with a stylish fashion sense that should attract both corporate and social areas; though the mention of a QVGA resolution to fill the P200’s rumoured 2.6 inch display screen is somewhat of a disappointment.

High-resolution displays are quickly becoming the big seller with the latest smartphones, and maybe this will make shoppers pass over the Sony Ericsson P200, and all because of a little oversight on the resolution front, still there is still time for the Sony Ericsson techs to take the P200 back to the drawing board and make the necessary changes in the display to give the P200 at least a fighting chance.

Anyway, there you have it, the mobile phone formally known as Paris is now the P200, and personally I think Paris sounds so much better that just another number. Maybe mobile phone manufacturers should move away from the letter/number names and keep with real words for phone names.

The £5 Hop1800 disposable mobile phone gets launched

Its creators call it the Anti-iPhone and it is easy to see why, the Hop1800 mobile phone is as basic as it can get with a suggested retail price of $10 (£5).

It will be available at launch in worldwide and is one of many cellphones that have been designed for only one purpose : making phone calls only.

The Hop1800 does not even come with a screen and will be sold unlocked; at 77 grams, it offers four hours talk time, 150 hours of standby time - although you won't be able to visualise your remaining battery life - and polyphonic ring times.

Its keypad buttons have Braille markings and two versions of the phone will be available to cater for a worldwide audience.

The company is also considering a "recycle-a-phone" scheme where owners would be encouraged to send back their old HOP1800 phones and get a $5 rebate.

However, HOP-On is not the only handset manufacturer which is planning to exploit the booming market of developing countries and backup handsets and as we wrote earlier in April, the Hop-1800 will face very serious competition from the likes of Sagem and Nokia which launched a few £5 mobile phones with colour screen.

What will dominate the mobile phone market? Touchscreen is a good start

We all live in a world of high technology especially when it comes to mobile phones, but a question we would love answered has to be “What will dominate the mobile phone market?

Personally the way forward is definitely the touchscreen, we all know that Apple are the ones who mainly started of the world of super class high technology when it comes to mobile phone touchscreens and that is on the Apple iPhone, their touchscreen technology is without a doubt in my mind the best we have as of yet and we know for a fact it will not stop there.

We can see all phones becoming touch sooner or later, why the hell do we need buttons/keys when we can touch our way through, touchscreen handsets such as the Apple iPhone and even the new HTC Touch Diamond will dominate the mobile phone market and will definitely push the global count to a staggering 833 million within the next 5 years (This number comes from iSuppli). iSuppli have said that technology which is being pushed by the popularity of Apple’s iPhone and it is this phone that will cause global shipments of touchscreen display phones to more than double from 2008 to 2012. At the moment there are eight well know touchscreen technologies such as projected capacitive, infrared, bending wave, surface capacitive, surface acoustic wave, resistive, optical imaging and active digitizer and we can see even more following in the near future. Other touchscreen technologies that stand out come from the likes of Sony, N-trig, TMD, Sharp and Samsung.

Sony Ericsson G702 mobile phone passes FCC

FCC documentation reveals a new mid-range candy-bar design mobile phone from Sony Ericsson is on its way, the Sony Ericsson G702. The latest from Sony Ericsson is similar in appearance to that of the Sony Ericsson G502 and C702 but incorporates a different feature set.

The FCC documents confirm the Sony Ericsson G702 mobile phone will have GSM/EDGE 850/1900 MHz, and there will be Bluetooth radios as well. Also it will house a 3.2 megapixel camera, roller bar for screen navigation, and an M2 memory slot. There is also a red stylus with would indicate the G702 being a touch-screen mobile.

The Sony Ericsson G702’s draft user manual makes reference to a touch UI, so taking all this into consideration it seems that the Sony Ericsson G702 will be UIQ based, it also references Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G although this has not been confirmed by the FCC documents.

Apparently the Sony Ericsson G702 smartphone will have pre-installed Google Mobile Maps along with WayFinder Navigator while Opera v9.5 will bring full HTML browsing and Flash lite 3 support, and according to the user manual the user will be able to switch to landscape browsing via hitting the “5” key.

So it looks as if an Americanised version of the Sony Ericsson G702, which was originally aimed at the Asian market, will be heading for the American market, as why else would the Swedish mobile manufacturer send an Asian phone to the FCC?

As yet no conformation on availability date or a price band, but I guess as usual all the necessary info will come in due course.

Samsung F480 TouchWiz (SGH-F480)

We first caught sight of the Samsung F480 back in February when it was announced at the GSMA event along with dozens of other handsets, and we have to confess that we had rather forgotten about it. It is timely then that Samsung have given us a prod to remind us of the F480 which should start to be available from June in certain markets.

Now branded with the somewhat strange but memorable "TouchWiz" name, Samsung have been given a glimpse of the F480's new interface, also dubbed "TouchWiz". There are no prizes for guessing that the TouchWiz interface is designed to compete head-on with the iPhone, but the overall specification is much closer to LG's Viewty than Apple's offering.

We've covered the F480's specifications before, but as a reminder: this is a 3.5G phone with a 2.8" 320 x 240 pixel touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash plus a secondary video calling camera. The F480 has microSD expandable memory (up to 8GB), an FM radio, a comprehensive multimedia player and USB 2.0 and Bluetooth 2.0. However, the downside is that the F480 doesn't have WiFi or GPS support. Despite the large screen and 3.5G capabilities, the TouchWiz is a surprisingly compact device at 98 x 55 x 11.5mm and 91 grams in weight.

On paper, the Samsung F480 TouchWiz certainly compares very well with the iPhone.. but we know that Apple have a next generation iPhone waiting in the wings which could be much tougher to beat.

Samsung indicate that the F480 TouchWiz should be available from June 2008 onwards at a price of around €500 (£400) before carrier subsidy. There are some unconfirmed reports that the F480 may have different branding in the UK.

World's Best Tips And Tricks For Mobile Phones

Today Mobile phones are becoming an integral part of our routine life. To be convenient all the time, keep your mobile phone running smoothly through extremely simple tips.

(1) The Worldwide emergency number for Mobile Phones is 112. When you are out of coverage area merely dial 112 and the mobile will search for any existing network. This number 112 can be dialed even while the keypad is locked. That's part of the GSM standard. GSM standards accept that code to remap to the local emergency number, be it 911, 111, 999, or in our case 000.

(2) Disable your stolen phone by noting down 15 digit IMEI number previously. Press *#06# then a 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to every handset. Note it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your cell phone gets stolen then you can call your service provider and give them unique code and they will be able to block your handset. So even if the thief replace the SIM card your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use or sell it to others. If we all follow this then there would be no point in people stealing mobile-phones.

(3) If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home then, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Now hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and let the other person at your home press the unlock button on your spare keys, holding it near the phone on their end. Finally your car will be unlocked. Distance is does not matter here. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors.
* Your car should have audio tones, or is susceptible to RF interference.

(4) Nokia Mobiles have hidden battery power which you can utilize in emergency. Suppose your cell battery is very low and you are expecting an important call even you don't have a charger. Nokia instrument comes with a reserve battery which you can be activated by pressing the keys *3370#. Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when u charge your cell next time.

(5) Mobile phones should not be frequently charged, it may reduce the battery life. Always track the battery charge indicator, and carry mobile charger in purse/bag/car to avoid the contingency of battery discharge.

(6) Every mobile handset has an IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity), which is a unique number and anyone can access this number by merely pressing *#06#. The mobile warranty is attached to the IMEI number, and it is also useful in the event of theft. This IMEI can be used to prevent your phone joining a phone network if the carrier has agreed to do phone blocking.

(7) The plastic cosmetic parts lose their glare and color due to heavy exposure to sun light and too much of heat so in order to avoid direct sun exposure, one must use mobile pouches, cases and covers.

(8) Always buy Mobile phone with a long "talk time". It is more efficient, with less powerful emissions.

(9) To avoid the Liquid Crystal Damage (LCD) damage always check it out that while your phone is in the purse or while you are seated it is not in the contact with any sharp/hard object. Its advisable to use pouches or mobile covers to avoid this kind of damage.

(10) It's always advisable to install anti-virus software in your MobilePC to avoid any inconveniences.

Mobile Phones have achieved a huge chunk of significance in our lives today which makes necessary to become aware of all the secret tips as they can be useful and handy at many times. Also one must try to keep all the Mobile Accessories with them like chargers and USB cables to avoid inconveniences.

Orange maps out agreement with Nokia

Orange has signed a three-year deal with Nokia to bring the Finnish phone maker's mobile maps and games services to its customers in nine European countries, including Britain, this year.

The deal, to be announced today, is a step back for Nokia, which had threatened the position of mobile phone operators with the launch of its own suite of mobile services under the Ovi banner last year.

Ovi was seen as a direct challenge to the power of the big mobile operators such as Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile which are trying hard to persuade customers to do more than talk and text.

But today's deal, under which Orange will share revenue with Nokia, will see the latter's mobile maps co-branded with the operator's name.

The two companies are aiming for 10 million Orange customers using Nokia's mobile maps by 2010. The deal is not exclusive and Nokia already has other partners.

While Orange and Nokia will sell their own games under their own brands, most significantly the deal does not include Nokia's music service, which caused consternation among mobile phone companies when it was unveiled last year.

They saw the service as a direct challenge to their relationship with customers and Orange said it would not let its users access the Nokia music store.

Anyone buying one of the 10 new Nokia handsets from Orange in the second half of the year will have one-click access to Orange's music store, which has about a million tracks.

Kai Öistämö, Nokia's head of devices, said the perceived fight between the company, and the rest of the industry was more "a public image rather than a reality".

T-Mobile debuts new Nokia music phone

Nearly six months after its next generation of music phones hit the market in Europe, Nokia is finally bringing the latest XpressMusic phones to the U.S.

T-Mobile USA on Tuesday unveiled the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic phone, a slim, music-playing handset, at a party here that featured specialty cocktails with names like Disco Lemonade and Purple Rain and performances by up-and-coming artists, K.i.D Cudi, Chester French and the DJ, Kid Capri.

T-Mobile is the first and only wireless operator in the U.S. to sell the new 5310 Xpress Music phone and its big brother the 5610 Xpress Music phone. Both phones were announced by Nokia last August, and they started shipping in Europe in the fourth quarter.

The Nokia 5310 MusicExpress handset hits T-Mobile stores on May 28. Unfortunately, the flashier Nokia 5610 won't be available until sometime this summer. Why the wait? The company is still adding and making special tweaks to the 5610 that are specially designed for the T-Mobile network, said Tom Harlin, product marketing manager at T-Mobile.

The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is a very slim candy bar style phone at only 0.39 inches thick and weighing just 3 ounces. It features a 2 megapixel camera that takes still pictures and videos. And of course, it's got a music player with external controls and stereo Bluetooth connectivity along with T-Mobile's special myFaves support.

Also in the box is a wired stereo headset, a USB cable for side loading music, and a memory card. And to top it off, T-Mobile has preloaded the phone with two exclusive new songs from artists Panic At The Disco and Phantom Planet. As an added bonus, the Nokia 5310 is also loaded with Panic At The Disco's latest video, "That Green Gentleman." T-Mobile also included a special making-of the video with a greeting from the band.

"We wanted people to be able to use it and start listening to music right out of the box," Harlin said.

Getting cool new phones like the XpressMusic phones into the U.S. market is important for Nokia as it tries to bolster its market share here. The company, which is the worldwide leader in handset sales, is in fourth place in the U.S. market. The company has been working closely with operators to get more of its handsets into the market, but it's struggled to make significant headway. That said, the company's CFO told Reuters earlier this week that it expects to grow its market share in North America into the double digits by the end of the year.

The music phones could be a good start for the company. Music-enabled phones made up 60 percent of the phones sold in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2008, according to the NPD Group.

The only downside to the new Nokia XpressMusic phones is that neither phone supports 3G, which means they won't be able to take advantage of T-Mobile's newly upgraded network. The phones also lack Wi-Fi. But at $50 for the Nokia 5310, the trade-off might be worth it. Pricing for the Nokia 5610 hasn't been disclosed yet.

Sony Ericsson shows off unknown handset in new video - gesture control on the way?

The mobile space is all about convergence. It's all about putting the power of a laptop, music player, camera, and PDA in the palm of your hand. To that extent, mobile phone manufacturers have been pushing their version of converged life on the consumer market with spiffy commercials and eye-catching graphics.

Sony Ericsson's new device presentation shows off just how "cool" and "hip" your converged life could be in their new video (below). Set to some funky electro-beats, the new video shows off one or two unknown handsets that look like all-touchscreen jobbies with media playback, media capture, and communications capabilities that seemingly turn your life into a gesture-controlled, psychedelic trip.

Most interesting in this video is the iChat-like chat/SMS text message interface that pops up around 0:55. It's also interesting to see Sony Ericsson showing off the devices' features using gesture-control. We're not looking for the next Sony Ericsson handset to sport gesture controls that rival the demonstration in the video, but the fact that SE applied for a patent on that idea and then showed off gesture-control in the video is interesting indeed. But, if Sony Ericsson ends up bringing the gesture-control features to market in the near-term, we told ya so…

HTC estimates to move 2 million Diamond mobile phones this year

I think it is obvious to most that the newly announced HTC Touch Diamond is at least on par with say the Apple iPhone appearance wise, both look stunning, although it isn’t just about those looks, it’s about quality specs such as the HTC Touch Diamond’s VGA screen and super cool UI, and I would imagine it is hard not to realise the HTC Touch Diamond will do just as well as the Apple iPhone in sales.

So, realising this it doesn’t come as that much of a surprise to learn that HTC has high hopes of moving 2 million HTC Touch Diamond units this year. Actually, HTC already has Taiwan based Chunghwa Telecom, who have plans to sell a total of 200,000 HTC Touch Diamond mobile handset in 08, to already place an order for between 20,000 and 30,000 of the sleek and sexy looking Diamond.

So if you work on that figure of pre-orders from Chunghwa Telecom, imagine just how many will be enough for the likes of say Orange, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Vodafone? Oh, by the way, just so you know and can have a rough idea just how lucrative the Taiwanese mobile market is the population of Taiwan is around 23 million people.

So the likelihood of HTC actually making their 2 million sales of HTC Touch Diamond handsets is more than realistic I would say considering HTC has sold a total of 2,000,000 HTC Touch Smartphone’s there’s no reason why the HTC Touch Diamond shouldn’t follow that trend. What do you think? Answers on a postcard to…Oh, no hang on, maybe just leave a comment here.

Apple's iPhone Officially Coming to Romania, via Orange

Orange, one of the largest mobile operators in the world, announced today the future availability of Apple's iPhone in Romania, as well as in many other countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The announcement comes after Vodafone, one of Orange's main competitors, also unveiled the upcoming release of the iPhone on ten new markets where the V carrier is present.

Although the iPhone's availability in Romania is officially confirmed, for the moment there are no details about the handset's price, nor about the exact date when users will be able to buy it. Moreover, Orange did not mention if it would bring the original edition of the iPhone or the new, 3G one that should be unveiled by Apple in the next months. I guess we're going to find out only when Orange decides to finally offer the handset.

Since its release in the US, back in September 2007, Apple's iPhone became one of the most wanted mobile devices ever created. At only 11.6 millimeters in thickness and 135 grams, the handset comes with a wide range of advanced features, including the 3.5 inch touchscreen display (320 x 480 pixels and 16 million colors), an innovative multi-touch interface based on the Mac OS X, high-end multimedia and Internet capabilities, a 3.5mm audio jack, Google Maps, Wi-Fi, a 2 Megapixel camera with video recording, all "assorted" with a generous built-in memory of 8 or 16 GB (depending on the phone's version).

Besides Romania, the rest of the markets where Orange will launch Apple's handset during 2008 are: Austria, Belgium, Portugal, Poland, Switzerland, Slovakia, Jordan, Egypt, the Dominican Republic, plus other African countries where Orange offers mobile services. These are Botswana, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Mali and Senegal – the iPhone will most probably be available there too.

Mobile Phones - The Future's Brighter, the Future's Green!

When it comes to purchasing a new mobile, one of the last things people take into consideration is how eco-friendly a prospective handset will be.

With the ever increasing interest in environmental friendly products though, many consumers are now beginning to question the impact their handsets' are having on the environment, and the changes that can be made to help lessen this problem.

The movement towards "greener" handsets though is proving a considerably slow one. This is because a great majority of the responsibility of making handsets more environmentally friendly lies with the manufactures and carriers, who, being very large corporations are not accustomed to making rapid changes.

A further problem lies with the end user, the consumer - if they do not express a desire for a greener phone then manufactures simply will not invest their time and resources in developing them.

As mentioned, manufactures are the major player when it comes to making the shift to greener phones. Some of the biggest areas they are working on are their choices' of materials and making their handset's more energy efficient. For instance, all handsets cannot be disposed of in normal household waste, because of the toxic materials used to make them. There are however, alternatives to these and a few major manufactures are experimenting with such materials.

There is a wealth of options manufactures can implement to make their phones more efficient, some as simple as giving users more control of standby time and screen brightness control.

Some overhauls that both manufactures and carriers can incorporate are to; use less packaging and to move towards green company practices. With regards to packaging, companies could simply use less and ensure if not all but the majority of the materials used are recycle.

Lastly, it is down to us, the end users - not only can we help drive manufactures to making more eco-friendly phones, but we can take some very simple steps to ensure we are doing our part. A quick list of these has been outlined below -

* Educate yourself on greener practices through manufactures websites, and support the efforts they are working towards

* Opt for paperless billing, if you have access to the internet, then there's no reason not too!

* Make sure you recycle any old mobile phones

* Try to avoid updating your handset every few months; mobile phones have a long lifespan so there's no need to update them that often. If you do however, then have a look online, where you're bound to find the best mobile phones deals.
